“We need a coat with two pockets. In one pocket there is dust, and in the other pocket there is gold. We need a coat with two pockets to remind us who we are.”

Parker Palmer

Good morning, friends!  I hope you are all doing well today, so far at least.  If not you have the rest of the day to turn it around.  Let’s get to it!

Simply put, if you don’t know who Parker Palmer is then look him up and read a book or two.  Thank me later.  He is a powerful and compassionate thinker and a blessing to the world.  Today he reminds us of the balance needed in life.  Are you balanced?

Many mornings I do an exercise that requires a lot of balance.  From a standing position, reach forward with your right arm while simultaneously reaching backward with your left leg.  Keep your left arm down by your side, balance on your left leg and keep reaching until you are as flat a T as you can get.  Hold it for a few seconds, then repeat on the other leg.  This is one; do ten on each leg.  The first time I tried this exercise I bobbled all over the place.  I couldn’t do one leg without falling; it was embarrassing, but at least I was alone.  After much effort I learned the balance and technique necessary to complete 30 pairs without falling or bobbling.  Do you see the metaphor for life I see in this exercise?

The dust pocket reminds us from whence we come.  Scientists say we were formed from star dust.  Christians also say we were formed from dust, only by God’s hands.  Regardless of your position the Ash Wednesday line is true: from dust you came, to dust you will return.  But dust is not all we are.  In the other pocket there is gold, reminding us that we have great value in our lives.  Now what you do with the gold that is your life is largely up to you but at a bare minimum do not deny that your life is worth a lot!  It is!

Too frequently our lives get out of balance, focusing too greatly on either the gold or the dust.  Don’t wobble; a healthy life keeps a hand in each pocket.  Be balanced; stay grounded in the dust while reaching for the gold.  With practice you’ll neither fall nor wobble.  You’ll shine, so get to it!  I have faith in you!  Have a great week.
